Community Medicaid/Medicare Part D Education: Seniors and the Underserved

What is Managed Care? What is the role of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) in the U.S. health care system? And why do patients need to know about it?

These are the questions our organization seeks to answer!

The mission of the AMCP outreach project is to help patients navigating the U.S. healthcare system. Through this outreach project, patients will be more familiar with how this healthcare system works, and we seek to bridge the health insurance information gap between patients and pharmacy.  We will explain some terminology patients may often hear in retail pharmacy, such as PAs (prior authorizations), refill too soon, non-formulary, not covered, etc. Also, we wish to improve patients' familiarity with government based health plans like Medicare and Medicaid.

We have pharmacists working in the Managed Care field overseeing our Outreach Projects as preceptors. It is a great opportunity for our pharmacy students to network with real professionals, build patient care skills, and expand their managed care knowledge!
